Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'New Era' for New York City in Maiden Address
During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his administration.
A Groundbreaking Leader
The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.
A Sweeping Policy Agenda
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

- Free buses
- A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
- A trial program of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
