Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at each end of the field

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
